At "Banyenong West", we have an extensive breeding program,
which combines selection of the best quality sheep using both visual and
"Lambplan" data to produce rams of the highest quality. "Lambplan"
is an Australia wide program, . used to assist in stud and commercial
breeding . We, at "Banyenong West", have been using "Lambplan"
since 1992 and continue to hold our Gold Star status (for accuracy
and reliability of data input).
Lambplan calculates
- Weight (wwt) (weighed at birth, weaning, 7months, and 12 months)
- Eye muscle (pemd) (calculated at 7 months )
- Fat depth (pfat) (calculated at 7 months )
This gives an overall picture of the animals development. This data is
then calculated to give a estimated breed value or Carcase-Plus index
to meet both trade and export market requirements. This is used as a guide
for both the stud breeder, and lamb producer. Particular attention is
paid to the growth rate, to assist in producing an early maturing lamb
to meet market requirements.
We also feel that visual appraisal of our sheep is of great importance.
We continue to have success in the "show-ring" and find this
an extremely valuable tool for comparing our sheep with other top Studs
Australia wide therefore producing both "Quality and Performance".
